British Council funding has been used to provide reciprocal visits for English and Kenyan teachers. A key element of the partnership is to support equality, so that Kenyan teachers can visit the UK. This equity is essential for the project to have maximum impact on the children's attitudes and understanding, as well as on teacher's pedagogy and practice.
The partnership with Njoro DEB Primary School in Kenya was established in 2009 with British Council funding, and has been maintained ever since in a range of ways. Njoro DEB Primary School has approximately 1300 children on role. It serves the township of Njoro, near Nakuru, in the Rift Valley in Kenya.
There is extensive communication between the two schools as teachers in England and Kenya have developed close personal friendships. Professionally, there has been a huge impact on the children of both schools through attitudes, understanding of global citizenship and personal development. Teachers in England and Kenya have all developed in terms of their teaching practices, taking the best of the ideas from each others' schools.
One of the main aims of the partnership is to develop a sense of equality with others around the world. This helps our children to understand the challenges faced by others, but also to understand that despite being a third world country, there is an incredible vibrancy and richness to the Kenyan culture.
When the children at Wincham CP School grow up, they will be working with people around the world, collaborating online and using video calling and other online collaborative tools as part of their daily lives. In order to prepare them for this, we must equip the children with tolerance, empathy and understanding.
The partnership originally began in 2009 linked to work done by Egerton Primary School who share a historical link with Egerton Primary School in Njoro. Lord Egerton, of Tatton Park, visited Kenya, and eventually relocated there. Lord Egerton established Egerton Primary School in Knutsford, Cheshire, as well as Egerton Primary School and Egerton University in Njoro.
Multiflex sports coaches teach PE in Egerton Primary School and Wincham Primary School, and staff from Multiflex have been instrumental in developing partnerships across a range of schools in Cheshire East and Cheshire West. In the past, the Multiflex team led an inter school sports competition in England, where all the schools with partnerships competed against each other. This competition was replicated in Kenya, where the link schools all competed. Scores from each partnership - the English school and the partnered Kenyan school - were added together to give an overall score for each partnership, leading to Wincham and Njoro winning the tournament.
Multiflex sports coaches have visited a wide range of schools in the area over the years, becoming an integral element of the partnership, and bringing children together through sport has always been a large part of each visit.
British Council priorities have influenced some of the projects that of the work in recent years has been linked to the Sustainable Development Goals, or Global Goals, showing children in England and Kenya how we all have similar priorities, and how we can work together for the good of the global community by focussing our efforts on the goals.
As part of the British Council work, the same lessons have been taught in both England and Kenya, for the children to gain the sense of equity, and for them to
also see that despite their geographical and socio-economic differences, at heart, they are all children who are learning the same things.
Our vision and ethos for the school underpins everything we do. Our aim is for the children to become true ‘global citizens’, ready to engage with people of different cultures, faiths and backgrounds from around the world. We do this by embracing the similarities and differences between ourselves and people around the world. We recognise that in understanding different cultures, it enriches our lives, enhances our respect for differences, and also allows us to understand the challenges faced by people in other countries.
This is done through explicit teaching about how the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development link to the National Curriculum. These are the ‘golden threads’ that are woven throughout the teaching and learning at Wincham, so our curriculum is designed to suit the needs of our pupils. A large part of the global dimension of our curriculum comes from the links that we make with our partner school, Njoro DEB Primary School in Kenya, where we make links between our society and that of our Kenyan friends and colleagues.
Over time, the Global Goals have become part and parcel of what we do at Wincham Community Primary School. Projects that have happened in England and in Kenya have been focussed on the children understanding and being able to apply their knowledge of the Global Goals.
Each of the visits has had a key focus, often set by the British Council as part of the funding requirements. The end result of recent projects is held in 2 identical 'floor books, one of which is kept in Wincham CP School, and the other is kept in Njoro DEB Primary School. The library at Njoro DEB Primary School has artefacts and examples of work from all of the projects done throughout the partnership.

In 2023, Lewis Murray became the first person to have participated in the partnership as a child and as an adult. Lewis was a pupil at Wincham CP School in 2009, when the partnership was established.
In February 2023, Lewis visited Njoro DEB School as a sports coach working with Multiflex. On visiting the school, Lewis found a photo of him and his classmates from 2009 which had been on display in the school office ever since.
This message has been shared with all of the Kenyan children that have been involved in partnerships during the 2023 visit, as an inspirational example that with hard work and determination, they too may get a chance to visit their partner school.
