At Wincham Community Primary School, our intent is to foster a love of language learning and a genuine interest in other cultures. We believe that learning a second language provides a valuable educational, social, and cultural experience for all pupils. It helps children to develop communication skills, including the core pillars of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
Our curriculum is designed to:
Build Communicative Confidence: Enable children to understand and respond to spoken and written language from authentic sources.
Develop Linguistic Curiosity: Teach children to spot patterns in language, understanding how grammar and structure work across different tongues.
Broaden Cultural Horizons: Immerse children in the traditions, celebrations, and daily lives of people in the countries where the target language is spoken.
Prepare for Future Learning: Lay the foundations for further foreign language study at Key Stage 3, ensuring children have the "phonological awareness" and enthusiasm to succeed.
Language is the ultimate tool for Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals. By breaking down language barriers, we enable the global cooperation needed to solve the world's challenges.
Goal 4: Quality Education – Learning a language improves cognitive development and literacy in the child's mother tongue. It encourages a "growth mindset," as children learn to take risks with new sounds and expressions.
Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities – By learning a foreign language, children gain empathy for those who may be learning English as an additional language (EAL) in our own community. It fosters an environment where linguistic diversity is seen as a strength, not a barrier.
Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions – Conflict often arises from a lack of understanding. By learning to communicate with people from different nations, our pupils are taking the first steps toward becoming global peacemakers who can bridge cultural divides through dialogue.
