At Wincham Community Primary School, our intent is to break the "desk-bound" mold of traditional education. We recognise that movement is a powerful catalyst for cognition; when children are physically active, they are more engaged, retain information better, and develop a more positive attitude toward challenge. By integrating movement across the curriculum, we ensure that "Healthy Bodies" and "Healthy Minds" develop in tandem.
Our approach to Active Learning aims to:
Boost Cognitive Function: Use physical activity to increase blood flow to the brain, improving focus and "on-task" behaviour in subjects like Maths and English.
Utilise our Environment: Maximise the use of our outdoor spaces and specialised resources (such as Teach Active) to create immersive, kinaesthetic learning experiences.
Increase Daily Activity: Help every child work toward the Chief Medical Officer’s recommendation of 60 active minutes a day, without losing vital curriculum time.
Build Collaboration: Use active "team-based" learning to develop communication, leadership, and social bonding through movement.
Active learning is a practical commitment to Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing and Goal 4: Quality Education.
Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing – We are tackling the global crisis of physical inactivity at the root. By making movement a natural part of a Maths or Grammar lesson, we are teaching children that being "active" isn't just for the playing field—it is a lifestyle choice that protects their long-term health.
Goal 4: Quality Education – Research shows that "kinesthetic" learners often struggle in static environments. By providing active options, we are ensuring a more inclusive and high-quality education that reaches every type of learner, ensuring no child is left behind due to a "sit-still" expectation.
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – By encouraging outdoor learning and active movement, we foster a deeper connection between our children and their local environment. This "sense of place" is the first step in wanting to protect and build sustainable communities for the future.
