At Wincham Community Primary School, our intent is to inspire in pupils a lifelong curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. We aim to equip children with a deep understanding of diverse places, people, resources, and natural and human environments, together with a robust grasp of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
Our curriculum is designed to:
Develop Spatial Awareness: Teach children to use maps, globes, aerial photos, and digital mapping (GIS) to locate and describe the world's most significant features.
Foster Fieldwork Skills: Ensure children learn through direct experience, using the local environment of Northwich and the Cheshire landscape as a living classroom.
Understand Interdependence: Help pupils realise how the decisions made in one part of the world (like our consumption habits) impact environments and communities thousands of miles away.
Nurture Environmental Stewardship: Empower children to understand the challenges facing our planet, such as climate change and plastic pollution, and to see themselves as part of the solution.
Geography is arguably the "home" of the Sustainable Development Goals. It is fundamentally linked to Goal 13: Climate Action and Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities.
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – By studying our local area and comparing it to cities worldwide, children learn about urban planning, transport, and how we can make our own community more sustainable and inclusive.
Goal 13: Climate Action – Geography provides the scientific and social context for climate change. Our pupils study weather patterns, rising sea levels, and the impact of deforestation, learning the "why" behind the need for urgent climate action.
Goal 14 & 15: Life Below Water & Life on Land – Through the study of rivers, oceans, and biomes (such as rainforests), children understand the delicate balance of ecosystems. They learn how human geography—such as farming and industry—must be managed to protect the biodiversity of our planet.
