At Wincham Community Primary School, our intent is to provide a religious education that encourages pupils to explore the "Big Questions" of life. We follow the Cheshire West and Chester Agreed Syllabus, designed to help children develop their own sense of identity and belonging, while sparking a curiosity about the beliefs and practices of others.
Our curriculum is designed to:
Foster Religious Literacy: Teach children to use specialized vocabulary to describe the beliefs, practices, and traditions of the world’s major religions and non-religious worldviews.
Encourage Reflective Thinking: Create a safe space for children to reflect on their own experiences, values, and beliefs, while listening with empathy to others.
Promote Mutual Respect: Develop an understanding of the diversity within and between religions, challenging stereotypes and building a culture of tolerance.
Analyze Sources of Wisdom: Introduce children to sacred texts, stories, and the lives of influential leaders to understand how faith can shape actions and decisions.
RE is a primary driver for Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals. It is the subject where we learn to live together in harmony.
Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities – RE directly addresses prejudice and discrimination. By learning about the common values shared across different faiths—such as charity, compassion, and justice—children learn to see past differences and advocate for a fairer world.
Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – A sustainable community is one where everyone feels safe and respected. By visiting local places of worship and meeting members of different faith groups, our children learn how diverse communities can coexist and support one another.
Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions – Many of the world’s most significant peace movements are rooted in religious or philosophical convictions. Our curriculum explores how faith can be a powerful force for reconciliation and the promotion of human rights.
