At Wincham Community Primary School, our intent is to provide a high-quality PE curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We believe that a positive experience in PE is the foundation for a lifetime of health and wellbeing.
Our curriculum is designed to:
Develop Physical Literacy: Systematically build fundamental movement skills (agility, balance, and coordination) from Early Years through to Year 6.
Encourage Competitive Excellence: Provide opportunities for children to represent Wincham in a variety of sports, fostering a healthy sense of competition and teamwork.
Promote Holistic Health: Teach children how physical activity impacts their mental health and how to make informed choices about nutrition and lifestyle.
Build Character & Resilience: Use sport as a vehicle to teach core values: fairness, respect, discipline, and the "grit" to keep going when a challenge is tough.
Physical Education is the "engine room" for Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing and provides a unique platform for Goal 5: Gender Equality.
Goal 3: Good Health and Wellbeing – By instilling a love for movement and sport, we are directly combating global trends in sedentary lifestyles and childhood obesity. We teach children that being active is a fundamental part of maintaining a healthy body and a happy mind.
Goal 5: Gender Equality – Our PE curriculum is inclusive and challenges stereotypes. By celebrating the achievements of diverse sporting role models and ensuring every child has equal access to every sport—from football to dance—we promote the message that talent and passion have no gender.
Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions – Sport has a unique power to unite people. Through "Fair Play" initiatives and team-building, our children learn that following a set of shared rules and respecting an official (referee/umpire) is the basis for a peaceful, functioning society.
