Curriculum Intent

Our vision and ethos for the school underpins everything we do.  Our aim is for the children to become true ‘global citizens’, ready to engage with people of different cultures, faiths and backgrounds  from around the world. We do this by embracing the similarities and differences between ourselves and people around the world. We recognise that in understanding different cultures, it enriches our lives, enhances our respect for differences, and also allows us to understand the challenges faced by people in other countries.

This is done through explicit teaching about how the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development link to the National Curriculum.  These are the ‘golden threads’ that are woven throughout the teaching and learning at Wincham, so our curriculum is designed to suit the needs of our pupils.  A large part of the global dimension of our curriculum comes from the links that we make with our partner school, Njoro DEB Primary School in Kenya, where we make links between our society and that of our Kenyan friends and colleagues.

Curriculum Implementation

Topics will be based on a question;  reflecting children’s interests and their world making learning meaningful. Early Years children work on a 1 year plan, and the rest of the school works on a 2 year rolling programme.

Teachers will plan:

  • Using objectives from the National Curriculum

  • A key question that forms the focus for the topic

  • To progressively develop the children’s acquisition of knowledge and vocabulary in order for them to deeply understand the key concepts of the curriculum they are being taught

  • To build on existing prior knowledge

  • An exciting ‘hook’ for learning to engage, motivate and enthuse the children

  • A key, high quality book for the half term which links to the wider curriculum

  • Strong, meaningful links between subjects wherever possible to connect learning

  • To link their teaching to the Global Goals to show the children how what we learn impacts others around the world

  • To build up memory, so that when children encounter a new topic, they will be able to activate prior learning and make connections

Curriculum Impact

The impact of our curriculum can be seen in the formal assessments undertaken with all children (Early Years Profile, Year 1 Phonics check, Year 2 SATs and teacher assessments, Year 6 SATs and teacher assessments) as well as other formal assessments used at the end of each year group such as NFER Reading and Maths tests.

In each topic, children complete a pre learning mind map.  This shows them and their teachers the gaps in their learning, and what they will be working on during the forthcoming half term  This provides a baseline for knowledge and understanding of key vocabulary. The mind map is completed again at the end of the unit of work, showing the concepts, knowledge and vocabulary that have been gained during the topic.

The impact of the ‘formal’ curriculum (how we teach the objectives in the National Curriculum) and the ‘informal’ curriculum (personal development, attitudes and dispositions) can also be seen in discussion with and observation of the children, as they grow into young people ready to move to the next stage of their learning.

To help parents support their child, teachers send home detailed half termly newsletters, which outline  what children will be learning in school over the next few weeks.  These can be found on the class webpages.

Curriculum maps

In Nursery and Reception classes, the children access the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum at the level appropriate to them.  In Key Stages 1 & 2, because the school has a 1 1/2 form entry system, the curriculum works on a 2 year rolling plan.  Children cover the entire curriculum, working alongside their peers, either in Year A or in Year B.
